The Introductory Educational Programme is designed to provide teachers, students, and lifelong learners with a clear and accessible understanding of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and their role in addressing climate change.
Through a structured set of digital Open Educational Resources (OERs), the programme introduces the fundamental principles behind NbS and explains how they can strengthen the resilience of ecosystems and communities while generating environmental, economic, and social benefits.
The programme is organised around the three dimensions of sustainability. The first module focuses on the environmental dimension, exploring climate-related challenges such as floods, droughts, and desertification, and presenting ecosystem-based mitigation approaches.
The second module addresses the economic dimension, showing how NbS can help productive sectors such as agriculture and forestry adapt to climate change and become more resilient over time.
The third module examines the social dimension, highlighting the contribution of green infrastructures and ecosystem services to quality of life, health, and community well-being.
Beyond knowledge transfer, the programme is specifically designed to support the development of competences aligned with major European educational frameworks. It contributes to the strengthening of Key Competences for Lifelong Learning, particularly mathematical competence and competence in science, technology, and engineering, through the understanding of natural processes and climate-related challenges.
It also strengthens digital competence through the use of innovative digital learning environments and self-learning tools.
At the same time, the programme promotes several competences included in the European GreenComp framework. Learners are encouraged to develop Systems Thinking, understanding the complex interactions between environmental, economic, and social systems.
They also develop Problem Framing by analysing climate challenges through a transdisciplinary perspective, and Futures Literacy by building a resilience-oriented and eco-centric vision of sustainability.
By combining scientific knowledge, digital learning, and competence development, the programme helps learners build the foundations needed to participate actively in the green transition and explore future educational and professional opportunities in the sustainability sector.
